HBO Max has introduced a new Shuffle button to help you watch random episodes of some of its most popular shows. While this isn't the first time we've heard of a Shuffle button on a video streaming platform, HBO Max puts a different spin on it compared to Netflix.
HBO Max launched its Shuffle feature on March 22nd and is currently only available on the desktop. So, if you watch HBO Max on your computer, you'll notice the new button, but you can't enjoy the feature on your smart TV just yet.
How Does Shuffle Work on HBO Max?
The Shuffle feature is only available for under 50 shows on HBO Max. Once you visit the main page of one of these shows, you'll notice a new button next to the play button that allows you to watch the show from the start or pick up from where you left off. Titled simply "Shuffle" and with the widely recognized symbol, it will be hard to miss.
HBO cited how its Shuffle option differs from those offered by other streaming services, saying, "Unlike other offerings, the HBO Max shuffle button randomizes episodes rather than series, giving users some context into the content they will be shown."
Even though Netflix introduced a similar shuffle function in 2021, the two platforms use this differently. While HBO Max shuffles episodes from a show you love for you, Netflix gives you a random show to watch and hopes that you like it enough to stick to it.
Netflix's "play something" may feel like it will save you time when you cannot decide what you want to watch, but it may actually end up wasting more of it if you figure out you dislike the show entirely after an episode or two.
On the other hand, you pick a beloved show with HBO Max and watch a random episode. You know you'll enjoy anything you get if you've already watched that particular title before, especially something popular like Friends. The feature is also handy for kids who watch cartoons like Tom and Jerry.

At the time of writing, the Shuffle button is only available in 45 series on the platform. We're fairly sure you've binge-watched at least one of these:

More HBO Max Content to Come
The list of shows and movies that HBO Max will offer Shuffle on will undoubtedly grow in the months and years to come. Given how HBO Max and Discovery+ are bound to merge at one point in the future, we'll likely see a lot of those titles with this new feature.
