On Monday morning of 21st January 2013, a man called 911, reporting that he had killed his wife and son. The man, who was not identified until the next day, claimed the following:

When the Boulder City police officer arrived at the crime scene, they saw the lieutenant standing in the doorway of his house. He appeared to be holding a gun in his hands. Unfortunately, Hans was uncooperative with the police and thus went back into the house, threatening to set the house on fire and take his life.

A few minutes later, as the police officers surrounded the lieutenant's home, the off-duty officer set the house ablaze and fatally shot himself. Immediately, the Boulder City and Henderson fire department were called to the scene, where they successfully battled the blaze.

The SWAT officers were called to the house, where they entered and found three bodies. Later, Sherriff Douglas Gillespie from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police, where Hans Walters worked, confirmed the killings. He offered reassurance to the grieving families and friends of the victims, stating:

Professing innocence and disbelief

Just before the entire house rose in flames, one of Walters' neighbours stated that Hans professed innocence in his final moments. A bystander at the scene of the crime, identified as Patrick Brewer, said he heard the statement:
